Dear Robin, overall I agree that for this image the colour version is better than the BW. However, the BW version in my opinion greatly gains from being cropped to the lower half! Try this by moving the image on the screen in order to remove the upper half. The upper half fades in the out of focus region and this is good when you have the colour, not so good in BW. By the way I found two Ansel Adams images of leaves in a similar vein: leaves, Glacier bay and leaves, mount Rainier. My favoured one remains pine cone and eucalyptus leaves, but I greatly enjoy yours as well.
Thanks Andrea. I hadn’t noticed about the crop of the B&W. It does improve it (although I still prefer the colour version). Funny you picked out the Mount Rainier image as that’s where this was taken. This will sound terrible but I don’t have a lot of familiarity with the work of Ansel. I know the popular half dome image and winter storm clearing. I even have his Print and Camera books but I haven’t spent a lot of time looking at them. I will need to google the pine cone image.
