The Best Sunset

In September 2020, I was fortunate to witness the best sunset I’ve ever seen. Whilst I have seen lots of dramatic and beautiful sunsets, this one sticks in my memory as the best. The colours were so vivid and lasted so long. I remember the sky colouring up at least an hour before sunset and the show continued for a good half hour after. And all this time the colours were changing between yellow, orange, gold and pink.

Blackpool sunset

This is one of the early images that I shot that evening in Blackpool. It’s a handheld capture using a Fuji XT3 camera and Fuji 18-135 lens at 37mm. The exposure is 1/100 second at f/10.0 and ISO160. I was also using a 3 stop Reverse ND filter on the sky.

I’m sharing this now because I’ve been going back through some of my more colourful shots. I’m reprocessing them using DxO PhotoLab 6 and the new Wide Gamut colour space. The results are often superb, and I love the colours produced. Other than working a little on the foreground to bring out the shapes in the sand, I did very little to this image.

More Photo Editing Innovation

If you read my blog post last week, you will know that I shared my video review of PhotoLab 6. Almost as soon as that was published, I found out that On1 Photo RAW 2023 was about to be released. I also managed to get hold of a pre-release version of the software to review.

When I tested On1 Photo RAW 2023 the software felt very innovative in the way the team has implemented AI. Whilst DxO has opted to use AI to maximise image quality, On1 is using it to make the editing process easier. This is probably best illustrated by the new On1 Super Select tool. Move the tool over the image you’re editing, and it will pick out objects. You can then click to select and edit that object.

If you want to see it in action, here’s a link to my video review on YouTube.

By the way, if you decide to purchase any ON1 products, you can secure a discount with the code LENSCRAFT20.

New Book Published

The final point to mention is that I’ve published a new version of my Nik Silver Efex Pro book. Mastering Nik Silver Efex Pro 3 has been updated to cover the new version of Silver Efex that was released in the Nik Collection 4. You can read more about it and buy a copy on my website. The book’s also available on Amazon.

Thanks for reading today’s post.

I hope you like the sunset image and have a great weekend.
