A recent image shot with the Olympus EM5 I had converted to infrared. The post processing is using Nik Silver Efex Pro. Selecting the highlights and then reducing the contrast whilst increasing the structure gives a kind of Halation effect.
I am a Landscape Photographer based in the North West of England. Unlike most photographers I believe smaller and lighter is better when it comes to cameras and equipment.

specifically how did you select the highlights in silver efex?
i mean, i love silver efex, but i find its “selection” tools limited to the circular control points to be not so helpful. Did you use control points or some other technique?
It was the control points only. I used two, one on either side of the grass. Are you aware that if you hold down the Ctrl key whilst resizing or moving the control point that you can see whats being selected. This helps me get the selection right. If I wanted to do it perfectly I would do the edit in two stages in Photoshop. The first would be a conversion. The second would be on another layer where I add the Control points to make the selections. I would then add a mask to the second layer in Photoshop to hide the control point edit. Finally I would paint the effect back in using a soft white brush on the mask. But in all honesty the method I used was fine as the adjustment with the control point was quite subtle.
was not aware of the ctrl-key option. that might make the selection much more useful. Wish they had something like the magic wand, but i’ll see how the ctrl-key works. Thanks
When you get used to the Ctrl key you will find it’s one of the most useful featues.
very nice image btw. I also shoot in IR. Would be interested in seeing the control points ‘edited’ version compared to the baseline silver efex version (i.e. the version without the control point edits).
